Published on November 21, 2019, a heated debate in the National Assembly turned violent when Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa threatened to physically assault Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga over a sex tape scandal.

The Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Committee had tabled a report accusing Wajir Women Representative Fatuma Gedi of leaking a letter to the media, which implicated some of her colleagues in sharing a fake sex tape.

MPs were divided on whether the report should be tabled until the DCI completed investigations to determine if the summoned MPs had indeed targeted Gedi with a fake sex tape.

Barasa's threat to beat up Wanga sparked an uproar, with female MPs criticizing him for his behavior.

“Mr Speaker, protect me from Gladys Wanga who is making noise. Mr Speaker, I will punch this lady because she is making noise to me,” Barasa said.

Speaker Justin Muturi reprimanded Passaris and Wanga, but not Barasa, in a break from house norms.

The incident drew criticism for the violence meted out on female legislators, with Wajir East MP Rashid Kassim earlier physically assaulting Gedi in the precincts of Parliament Buildings.
