On November 21, 2019, a car crashed into the Cheploch gorge, a 100-meter deep and crocodile-infested area along the Iten-Kabarnet road.

The vehicle, a saloon car, was headed towards Kabarnet town when it plunged into the gorge, leaving the driver as the sole occupant.

According to Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander John Mwinzi, the driver had been drinking with a friend at a hotel along the steep Iten-Kabarnet road, and the friend had left before him.

"We suspect that he sped to catch up with his friend who had left the hotel earlier," Mwinzi said, adding that recovery efforts were underway.

It is unclear which TV station the driver's friend works for, as the police have received reports that one of the two friends is employed by a popular media house.
