On November 20, 2019, Sony Sugar FC's relegation from the Kenyan Premier League was confirmed by the league body, following their failure to honour three matches.

The club's financial struggles, exacerbated by the withdrawal of main sponsor SportPesa last month, have led to their downfall.

According to KPL rules, a club must notify the league management in writing 48 hours before a match if they intend to forfeit it. Sony Sugar FC failed to do so, reaching the Kericho Green stadium late for their match against Zoo FC, which had already been given a walkover by the referee.

"The law is very clear, and as at now, they stand suspended and will definitely play next season in the lower league," said KPL CEO Jack Oguda.

Chemelil Sugar FC, another club facing financial difficulties, has also been given a warning by the league body. If they fail to honour their next match, they will face the same consequences as Sony Sugar FC.
