On November 21, 2019, Maasai land owners in Kajiado and Narok counties expressed their grievances to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, alleging that they were shortchanged by Ketraco on land acquired for way leave.

The land owners claim that they were paid only 30% of the approved compensation, despite the government and treasury releasing billions in the compensation scheme. In contrast, land owners in other areas received up to 100% of the allocated amount.

According to the land owners, the Ketraco board and management decided to slash the compensation to between 25% and 30% of the allocated amount, without a clear explanation.

One of the farmers, who wished to remain anonymous, narrated how Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko took them to State House to complain to Uhuru Kenyatta about the alleged bias against the Maasai community.

The land owners are now calling on the DCI and EACC to investigate the matter and arrest those responsible for the scam, which has caused a loss of hundreds of millions meant for the poor people.

They have also urged MP Tobiko and lawyer James Orengo to double their efforts in resolving the matter.
