Italian football club Roma has announced that it is in preliminary talks with potential investors interested in purchasing a stake in the Serie A club.

The talks, which were prompted by a 16.33 percent surge in the club's shares, aim to allow the investors to assess the opportunity of a potential investment.

According to Italian media, the US-based consortium Friedkin is looking to become major shareholders in the club, with a reported investment of Sh16.8 billion ($166 million).

However, Rome-based daily Corriere dello Sport has reported that the group led by American billionaire Dan Friedkin is aiming to buy the club outright.

James Pallotta, an American businessman, has owned Roma since 2012.
