On November 20, 2019, a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) was attacked by two armed thugs in Juja, Kiambu County.

The attack occurred near Seagull Hotel on Philo 1 Street, shortly after 9pm, as the student, Oliver Simiyu, walked with two friends to a hostel.

According to Kiambu County Commander Ali Nuno, the gang was armed with knives and targeted Mr. Simiyu and his friends.

Mr. Simiyu's friends managed to escape unhurt after surrendering their valuables, including two mobile phones.

However, Mr. Simiyu was assaulted and his phone was stolen. Witnesses reported that he bled heavily and was rushed to Jkuat Hospital.

Police confirmed that the victims reported the attack at Juja Police Station, and the incident is currently under investigation.

Police said the criminals took advantage of a power blackout to commit the offence and are following crucial leads for the arrest of the suspects.

JKUAT has faced several security concerns in the past, including a protest in February 2019 after a student was stabbed to death by armed robbers.
