On November 16, 2019, the bodies of Joyce Syombua, 31, and her two children, Shanice Maua, 10, and Prince Michael, 5, were discovered in a shallow grave at an old cemetery in Nanyuki town.
According to a post-mortem report, Joyce Syombua died of a head injury, while her children were strangled.
Major Peter Mugure, a military man, was arraigned on November 18, 2019, and detained for 21 days to allow police to complete their investigation.
Although Syombua's mother, Maua Malombe, positively identified the bodies before the post-mortem, the pathologist noted that the identities of the murder victims are presumptive and that a DNA analysis will confirm their true identities.
