On November 20, 2019, the insurance sector in Kenya was grappling with widespread fraud that had hampered industry growth for years.

The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) has announced plans to eliminate preprinted motor insurance stickers, replacing them with digital ones starting in March.

This move is expected to reduce fraud in the industry and benefit customers in several ways.

For one, criminals will no longer be able to sell fake stickers, as digital ones will be emailed directly to customers.

Police and other interested parties will be able to scan the digital stickers and access details about the insurer, expiry date, and nature of cover.

Consumers will also benefit from this change, as they will no longer need to physically access the issuer or broker to obtain the sticker.

Additionally, digital stickers can be printed as needed, eliminating the risk of losing or mutilating the original sticker.

Motorists who have been using fake stickers will now be held accountable, and the risk of unmitigated danger to themselves and other road users will be significantly reduced.
