On November 9, 2019, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) suspended five maize flour brands due to excessive levels of aflatoxin. Two of these brands, Dola by Kitui Four Mills and Kifaru by Alpha Grain Limited, have now been cleared to resume production.
According to statements released by KEBS on Wednesday, the two firms had met the approved quality standards after conducting a recall exercise of the affected products from the market.
KEBS inspectors conducted inspections to review the effectiveness of the controls put in place by the firms to ensure their future products meet the requirements of the fortified sifted maize meal specification.
The two firms are now expected to arrange for the destruction of the recalled non-conforming products and adhere to the scheme of supervision and control signed with KEBS.
KEBS has vowed to continue monitoring the effectiveness of the firms' sifted maize flour products through market surveillance, factory inspections, and testing.
