On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) conducted a sting operation in Kisumu, busting police officers taking bribes from motorists.
A shootout ensued on the Kisumu-Kakemega road next to Mamboleo junction, leaving a police officer nursing bullet wounds and another with a broken leg after fleeing the scene.
EACC Deputy Regional Manager Aura Chibole said five officers were caught taking bribes and have been processed for further action.
Chibole stated that the officers will be released on police bond pending a review of their files by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) before being arraigned in court.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Chibole emphasized that EACC will continue conducting sting operations to deter rampant reports of police officers soliciting bribes from motorists.
Nyanza police boss Dr. Vincent Makhoha said the officer who was shot is in a stable condition, describing the incident as a mishap.
Dr. Makhoha added that the DCI ballistic experts are investigating the incident to identify who was behind the shooting and will cooperate with EACC to combat graft.
