On November 20, 2019, Tottenham announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new head coach, hours after sacking Argentine Mauricio Pochettino following a run of poor results.

Mourinho's appointment comes as a surprise, given that Pochettino was only sacked on the same day, November 20, 2019, when Victor Wanyama was airborne, returning to London after captaining Kenya in the 2021 Africa Nations Cup qualification matches.

Wanyama, who was signed by Pochettino at Southampton for Celtic and later brought to Tottenham, appeared to have fallen out with his former coach, who suggested at a press conference earlier this season that offering Wanyama game time could be akin to participating in 'charity'.

Mourinho, known for his off-the-pitch success, has won league titles in Portugal, England, Spain, and Italy, alongside two Champions League titles. He is also remembered in Kenyan circles for signing Wanyama's brother McDonald Mariga at Inter Milan in January 2010, months after which the duo won the treble, including the Champions League, Italian League, and Coppa Italia Cup.
