On November 20, 2019, a Kenyan university student, Eric Obiero Nyadida, took Equity Bank to court over a song he claims he composed.
Mr. Obiero alleges that the bank used his song to advertise its Wings to Fly education sponsorship project without his permission or compensation.
He was acquitted of forgery charges in October 2017 after being prosecuted by the bank, alongside his brother, Geoffrey Nyadida Odongo.
Testifying in court, Mr. Obiero claimed that his rights were violated when he was detained at Kileleshwa Police Station at the age of 16.
He alleged that he was denied access to his parents and subjected to mental anguish over the last six years.
Mr. Obiero is seeking a conservatory order to restrain Equity Bank and its foundation from using his song in any advertisements, as well as costs of the case.
