On November 20, 2019, the East African Community (EAC) announced the postponement of its summit, originally set for November 30 in Arusha, Tanzania, due to a lack of quorum.
The EAC, comprising six member countries, was unable to meet the required quorum as representatives from one member country were absent.
According to official correspondence from Rwandan Minister of State Olivier Nduhungirehe, a new date in January or February will be communicated after consultations among EAC heads of state.
The postponement comes at a time when the EAC Secretariat has expressed concerns about low budget support by member states, which has caused several programmes to stall.
Estimates show that South Sudan and Burundi have been the main defaulters, with Kenya and Tanzania, the best performers in remittances, slowing down their payments in protest.
The EAC is approximately $100 million in arrears for the 2018/19 fiscal year, attributed to the outstanding debt of member states.
