On November 19, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko called for a 24-hour surveillance along the Nairobi River to curb the rising cases of murder and body dumping.
Just a week after the recovery of an infant's body in Korogocho slums, the Nairobi River regeneration team retrieved another body, this time a middle-aged man, at Ngong River in Kware area, one of the Nairobi River's tributaries.
According to the team, this brings the total number of bodies found along the Nairobi River to 18 since the launch of the Nairobi River Restoration early last year.
Out of the 18 bodies, 13 were infants and 5 adults.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko identified Korogocho slums as one of the dangerous areas and promised to enhance street lighting in the area and along the river to help security agencies beef up security.
“Residential areas around the river are probably home to criminal gangs who are killing and dumping innocent people in the river. We must find solutions. It is a security threat and we have to work closely with the police,” Sonko said in September.
