On November 20, 2019, allegations emerged that Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, also known as Babu Owino, had received cash from Deputy President William Ruto's camp in exchange for campaigning for Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga in the Kibra by-election.

A source revealed that one of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislators received a substantial payment from Mariga's team and promised to campaign for the former footballer, with the aim of delivering a favorable outcome in the Kibra poll.

The source described the legislator as a vocal and controversial ODM member, who allegedly went mute after realizing the race was tight and pretended to be sick when the campaigns were about to end, skipping the final rallies.

According to blogger Kenneth Ojuok's analysis, the described politician is believed to be Babu Owino, who has been vocal about his life being in danger due to powerful politicians allegedly seeking to eliminate him.

Ojuok took to his Twitter handle, urging Babu Owino to return the money he received from Ruto's camp, stating that his woes would be over.
