On November 18, 2019, the US government imposed sanctions on former Attorney-General Amos Wako and his family, citing their involvement in significant corruption.

According to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the sanctions were a demonstration of the US' commitment to supporting Kenya's fight against corruption, which is crippling the economy.

"Today's action sends a strong signal that the United States is a valuable partner in Kenya's fight against corruption," Pompeo said.

Prof. Makau Mutua, a US-based lawyer, welcomed the move, tweeting, "Former AG Amos Wako banned by the United States over Corruption. I'd be shocked if more heads don't roll."

The Kenyan government has yet to issue a statement regarding the development.
