On November 19, 2019, a university student, Eric Obiero Nyadida, took Equity Bank to court over a Sh10 million pledge and alleged rights violations.
Eric Obiero Nyadida, a Journalism student at a private university, claims to have composed a popular song used by Equity Bank to promote its Wings to Fly education sponsorship project.
However, instead of benefiting from his work, Mr. Obiero alleges that he was dragged through a criminal trial in 2017 for forgery, alongside his brother, after he asked the bank to pay him the promised amount.
He claims that his rights were violated when he was locked up in a police cell with adults at the age of 16 and denied access to his parents while in detention at Kileleshwa Police Station.
Mr. Obiero is now seeking a conservatory order to restrain Equity Bank and its Foundation from using his song in any advertisements, pending determination of the suit.
He is also seeking costs of the case.
