On November 19, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Margaret Nyakango for the position of Controller of Budget, a move that will see her replace Agnes Odhiambo whose eight-year non-renewable term ended on August 27.

According to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, the Finance and National Planning Committee will consider Nyakango's name before reporting to the House, recommending her approval or rejection.

Former Brand Kenya CEO Mary Kimonye chaired a selection panel that forwarded three top nominees to the President, with Nyakango being one of them.

Other nominees included Justus Nyamunga, Judith Akuma, Duncan Otieno, Edith King'ori, Leonard Lari, James Akeyo, Celestine Munda, Muinde Patrick, Karen Njeri, Macklin Ogolla, Elizabeth Mwathi, and Abubakar Abdirahman.

As Controller of Budget, Nyakango will be responsible for controlling withdrawals from the public kitty and managing counties' appetite.
