Kenya's fight against corruption has hit a snag, with the Interior Ministry topping the corruption index in a recent survey by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Released in 2018, the survey found that the Interior Ministry had a corruption perception index of 47.5%, followed closely by the Health Ministry, headed by Sicily Kariuki, with 17.9%.

According to the survey, the Interior Ministry's corruption index had dropped significantly from 64.7% in 2017, a decrease of 17.2%. The Health Ministry also saw a drop in corruption, from 27.8% in 2017 to 17.9% in 2018.

However, the Ministry of Agriculture, led by Mwangi Kiunjuri, recorded a rise in corruption incidences, with a corruption perception index of 13.8%.

Other ministries that made the list of the most corrupt government entities include the Lands Ministry, Transport and Infrastructure, Education, Devolution, Defence, National Treasury, and Energy.

EACC chairman Eliud Wabukala called for the strengthening of laws to combat corruption, saying that the data from the survey would help Kenya's anti-corruption strategy.

Wabukala also demanded that the national assembly amend the laws to provide timeliness in anti-graft trials, saying that cases should be expedited and disposed of within a certain timeframe.

He noted that the current system allows cases to drag on for years, with witnesses dying before they can testify.

The survey was conducted in all 47 counties between November 16 and December 19, 2018.
