Kenya's third-place ranking in cybercrime cases has prompted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to issue a warning to citizens about the rising threat of online scams.

According to the DCI, fraudsters are increasingly using the internet to target unsuspecting victims, with cases ranging from job scams to fake product vendors and even social media impersonation.

"We urge the public to exercise extreme caution when engaging in online transactions with companies, agencies, or individuals they have no credible information about," the DCI stated in a recent advisory.

The advisory listed several common scams, including job offers, fake product vendors, and social media impersonation, as well as cases of identity theft and financial exploitation.

"Pursuit of these criminals is often a lengthy procedure, requiring Cyber-Forensic Interventions," the DCI noted, adding that victims should report any losses to the nearest police station and obtain an abstract form to strengthen their defense.

As part of its efforts to combat cybercrime, the DCI is urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
