On November 6, 2019, a businessman from Emali town, John Mutunga, was allegedly defrauded of Sh500,000 by three individuals who claimed to have seeds that could cure cancer.
The trio, Scholastica Katulu, Catherine Kavumbu, and Bernard Nyamai, were arrested on November 8, 2019, and appeared before Makindu Principal Magistrate Jared Magori, where they pleaded not guilty to charges of cheating and conspiracy to obtain money through false pretense.
Ms. Katulu was also charged with an additional offense of registering a mobile phone sim card with a false name.
The court released each of the accused on a cash bail of Sh150,000 or a Sh250,000 bond with a surety and directed the investigation officer to access their call logs, M-pesa transactions, and bank statements to assist in the investigations.
The case will be mentioned on December 2, 2019, for a pretrial, followed by a full hearing on December 18, 2019.
