Silverstone Air Grounded: KCAA's Decision Sparks Mass Cancellations, Redundancy ¶
On November 12, 2019, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) grounded eight planes operated by Silverstone Air due to safety concerns. This decision led to mass cancellations of tickets and ultimately resulted in the airline's redundancy.
According to a statement by Silverstone Air on November 18, 2019, the company has become redundant due to KCAA's decision to ground its fleet. The airline has issued termination letters to its staff, stating that the company cannot continue to operate commercially.
On October 28, 2019, the KCAA launched an audit to ascertain compliance levels of Silverstone Air following a series of incidents that nearly led to accidents. One of the incidents occurred on October 11, 2019, when an aircraft with 50 passengers and five crew members crash-landed at Wilson Airport as it was departing for Lamu.
On November 5, 2019, Silverstone confirmed that its flight dash 8-300 from Lodwar to Nairobi lost one of its wheels during take-off. The aviation industry regulator grounded one fleet of Silverstone Dash 8 on November 12, 2019, for seven days over safety concerns, forcing the airline to suspend its services.
As a result of the KCAA's decision, Silverstone Air has become a victim of circumstances, with the airline's brand equity suffering irreparable damage due to mass cancellations of tickets.
