Busia County made a remarkable showing in the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination, with its candidate scoring the second-highest marks in the country.

Flavian Onyango of Chakol Girls Primary in Teso South topped the county with 439 marks, narrowly missing the top spot by just one point. He tied for second place with June Jeptoo Koech of Sangalo Central and Sean Michael Ndung'u of Kitengela International School.

Other notable performers in the region included Griffin Aarama Matundura of Elsa Academy, who scored 434 marks, and Gordon Oloo Okoth of Ober Boys Boarding School, who scored 432 marks.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha praised the performance of public school candidates, saying it was proof that the Free Primary Education Programme had come of age and that teachers were excelling despite higher enrolment.

Magoha noted that girls were competing favourably with boys for top academic honours, citing the impressive performance of Maria Clara Achieng' of Lwak Girls in Siaya County, who scored 426 marks.

Other schools in the region that posted impressive results included Xaverian, Arya Public Primary School, Golden Elites Academy, Maseno Girls Boarding, and Kisii's Elsa Academy.
