On November 18, 2019, a chaotic scene unfolded at the Likoni Ferry channel when 'MV Jambo' experienced a steering problem while en route to the island.
The ferry, loaded with passengers and vehicles, came to a halt halfway through the Likoni channel at around 2:30 pm, leaving everyone stranded momentarily.
Fortunately, another ferry, MV Kwale, came to the rescue, towing MV Jambo to the island ramp where passengers and vehicles disembarked safely.
According to Kenya Ferry Services, MV Kwale then towed MV Jambo to the Mbaraki wharf for repairs, apologizing for the inconvenience caused to ferry users.
Passengers on board MV Kwale were later discharged on the island ramp, with KFS expressing regret for the disruption.
Just a month prior, another ferry, MV Likoni, had stalled midway on October 13, and on October 29, a man's mobile phone caught fire on the MV Harambee ferry.
A Senate report had previously found the five ferries operated by Kenya Ferry Services to be potential deathtraps, citing issues with MV Kwale, MV Nyayo, MV Kilindini, MV Harambee, and MV Likoni ferries.
