The countdown to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games has begun in earnest with Athletics Kenya announcing that the national trials will be held at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret from June 19 to 21 next year.
According to AK senior vice president Paul Mutwii, the trials will be a crucial test for athletes seeking to represent Kenya in the 32nd Summer Games, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan from July 24 to August 9.
“We hope to name a strong squad for the Tokyo Olympics, and we are confident that the trials will provide us with the opportunity to identify the best athletes for the task,” Mutwii said.
The trials will be held at the same venue where AK hosted the trials for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, which proved to be a major success despite some challenges with the facilities.
However, the trials for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships, which will be held in Algiers, Algeria from June 24 to 28, and the World Under-20 Championships, which will be held in Nairobi from July 7 to 12, will be held in Nairobi.
Kenya is also set to participate in several other international events, including the Africa Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Lome, Togo on March 1, the World Indoor Championships, which will be held in Nanjing, China from March 13 to 15, and the World Half Marathon Championships, which will be held in Gdynia, Poland on March 29.
