On November 18, 2019, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha announced the results of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, and for one student, the news was particularly sweet.
Andie Munyiri, a student from Damacrest Academy in Nairobi, had been visiting his grandparents in Maragima village, Nyeri County, when he heard the news. He had scored an impressive 440 marks out of 500, making him the top KCPE candidate in the country.
When asked about his motivation, Munyiri credited the promise of a laptop and a trip to the Ark Hotel, which his father had made if he scored more than 420 marks. 'My father promised to buy me a laptop and take me to the Ark Hotel if I got more than 420 marks, this made me work so hard,' he said.
Munyiri's hard work paid off, and he is now hoping to join Alliance Boys High School. He aspires to become an automotive engineer, just like his grandfather. 'My favourite subject is science and I hope to become an automotive engineer like my grandfather,' he said.
