On Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha credited the tight security measures in place for the past four years with curbing cheating in national examinations.

According to Prof Magoha, the administration of the examinations this year showed that traditional forms of cheating had been largely eradicated.

He noted that only four candidates were disqualified due to impersonation, a stark contrast to previous years.

Prof Magoha attributed the success to the vigilant measures put in place, which allowed them to nip cheating cases in the bud.

He also highlighted that no fake examination papers were collected in any part of the country in 2019, a significant improvement from 2016 when 102 fake papers were collected.

Additionally, Prof Magoha said that KCPE monitors reported encountering confident and relaxed candidates during the exams, a testament to the hard work of teachers in preparing them.

However, he warned that a few adult individuals attempted to use unorthodox means to aid cheating in this year's KCPE, with one notable case being a private centre in Nyandarua that tried to engage in overt cheating.

As a result, 10 people, including eight examination officials, were arrested in connection with examination malpractices in Nyandarua, West Pokot, and Garissa.

Prof Magoha emphasized that none of the exams or questions were leaked, and the results reflected each candidate's abilities.

Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia also commended teachers for their hard work, stating that 99.99% of tutors did their job well.

Ms Macharia also announced that 56 teachers who caused some missteps during the administration of KCPE are under investigation.
