On a tense Monday morning in Nanyuki, hundreds of residents gave police officers a hard time when they brought Major Peter Mugure to court.
Major Mugure, a Kenya Air Force officer, is accused of murdering his wife, Joyce Syombua, and their two children in a gruesome killing that has left Kenyans shocked.
Published on November 18, 2019, the case has sparked widespread outrage, with residents demanding justice for the victims.
Major Mugure and his alleged accomplice, Collins Pamba, were brought to the Nanyuki court in a convoy of three unmarked police vehicles and produced before Chief Magistrate Lucy Mutai.
The court granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) 21 days to complete their investigations, which will involve visiting several crime scenes, conducting forensic examinations, and studying Syombua's phone communications.
Police said investigations are likely to reveal other suspects involved in the murder.
The court ordered Mugure to be detained at the Nanyuki Police Station and his alleged accomplice, Pamba, 25 kilometres away at Naromoru Police Station.
