On November 18, 2019, a Kenya Defence Forces officer, Major Peter Mugure, is expected to be arraigned at a Nanyuki court in connection with the murder of a woman and her two children. The three bodies were discovered at Makaburini in Thingithu area, stacked.

Major Mugure, 34, is said to have married Joyce Syombua and they had two children together. He had planned to attend his daughter's birthday, which was to be celebrated on November 1, and had asked Joyce to bring their children to Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki so that they could catch up before the celebration.

However, the family's relationship was marred by domestic issues, with some of Major Mugure's relatives opposing the union and discouraging him from getting married to Joyce. After they separated, Major Mugure's relatives allegedly collected his belongings from the house he was living in with Joyce, telling her that he had instructed them to do so.

According to Joyce's friend, Farrizanah Katengu, Major Mugure had not seen his children for a long time and had asked them to visit him so that he could spend time with them. However, Farrizanah also stated that Major Mugure had once denied siring their youngest child, Prince Michael, which prompted Joyce to seek legal intervention for child support. A DNA test later confirmed that Major Mugure was the biological father of both children.

Major Mugure's colleague described him as humble and claimed that he may have wanted to reconcile with his estranged partner. The colleague also stated that Major Mugure had built a family house in Ongata Rongai and had been acting normally despite the domestic issues in his relationship.
