On November 19, 2019, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) published a gazette notice to recover unpaid loans given to students over 44 years.
According to HELB, the names and pictures of institution beneficiaries who defaulted on their loans and failed to respond to repayment requests will be published in leading newspapers.
HELB stated, “Please take note the names and pictures of HELB loan beneficiaries who have defaulted repayment of the loan from 1975 to date shall be published in the leading newspapers, ” adding “The names will be published after the expiry of 30 days from the date of this notice and thereafter legal action may ensue against each defaulter as stipulated in the HELB Act.”
HELB uses the funds received from loan repayments to support current needy students, claiming that default hinders funding of other deserving Kenyan youths.
