On November 18, 2019, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) announced plans to publish the names and pictures of loan defaulters in leading newspapers.

This move aims to save needy children who require loans, as defaulters will be identified and held accountable.

According to HELB, the names and pictures of beneficiaries who have defaulted on loans from 1975 to date will be published.

HELB stated that some beneficiaries who are in default have not responded to previous communication, leading to sustained default, which hinders funding for other deserving Kenyan youth.

Beneficiaries who are not servicing their loans are advised to get in touch with HELB for particulars of their loan accounts and to confirm their loan status via the loanee portal on the website.

Legal action may be taken against each defaulter after the expiry of 30 days from the date of the notice.
