On November 18, 2019, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna announced that the party is ready to give Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala a direct ticket for a by-election if he decides to resign from ANC and contest on a different ticket.
The offer comes after Malala was suspended from ANC for gross misconduct after he campaigned for ODM candidate Imran Okoth in the Kibra by-election.
Speaking in Vihiga county at a funds drive for the Cheptulu Salvation Army, Sifuna said ODM will not hesitate to welcome Malala and stands with him firmly in the tribulations he currently faces with his party, ANC.
“Malala supported us in Kibra, ODM party will stand with him. ANC is pained after losing the by-election. They spent money and they are feeling the pinch. As the ODM secretary-general, I want to say that should they (ANC) oust you, we shall receive you,” Sifuna said.
Malala has refused to apologize to ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi for campaigning for Imran Okoth, saying he would rather go for a by-election than apologize.
Also suspended from ANC is nominated MP Geofrey Osotsi.
