On Saturday, November 16, a burial ceremony in Lwandanyi village, Siria constituency in Bungoma county, descended into chaos as two rival groups of youths clashed.

According to reports, youths allied to area ward representative Tonny Barasa and politician Moses Nandalwe allegedly attacked those allied to area MP John Waluke during the burial ceremony of former county council chair Robert Wanyera.

The scuffle lasted for over 20 minutes, with women and children scampering for safety. Efforts by church elders and event organizers to calm down the youths were futile, prompting police intervention.

Sirisia MP John Walukhe condemned the incident, urging youths not to allow themselves to be used by politicians. He also called on the youths to be at the forefront in maintaining order, especially during burial ceremonies.

Area parish priest Protus Oyanju also condemned the incident, urging the youths to respect the deceased. He advised the youths to channel their energy into more productive activities rather than engaging in fights.

Police are currently investigating the incident, which left over 10 locals nursing injuries.

Local leaders have called on the youths to respect the dead and maintain peace during burial ceremonies.
