On November 17, 2019, it was reported that taxpayers would bear the cost of Sh7.7 billion to relocate water and sewerage lines from the path of Kenya's first double-decker expressway in Nairobi.
The expressway, set to be built in Nairobi, will have a hidden cost of Sh7.7 billion, which will be used to move water and sewerage lines from its path.
Part of the money will cover the cost of completing water works in the Sh6.8 billion World Bank-backed Northern Collector Tunnel.
The Treasury has requested MPs to approve the allocation of the extra cash to be spent by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation on the Northern Collector and the James Gichuru Express Road.
According to Budget Committee chair Mr. Kimani Ichung'wah, the additional Sh7.76 billion budget to the ministry is meant for the relocation of water and sewerage works ahead of the construction of the expressway.
President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the construction of the double-decker road in October, which is set to link the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
