On Saturday evening, a violent clash between rival groups of touts at the Kisumu Bus Park left scores injured and two with stab wounds, which required them to be rushed to Aga Khan Hospital.

According to Kisumu Central police boss Martha Ngetich, the police had to use teargas and shoot in the air to quell the fight, which was sparked by a scramble to control passenger service vehicles (PSV) plying the Kisumu-Nairobi route.

"It is true there was some fracas on Saturday evening but we have restored peace. We have launched investigations to establish what triggered the fight," Ngetich said.

Passengers caught up in the fracas were forced to take refuge in kiosks as the touts fought each other, with the fight continuing into the night despite police orders to vacate the bus park.

A peace negotiator, Mr Audi Ogada, visited the park on Sunday morning to help reconcile the warring factions, saying, "I am heading to the bus park now. Tension is still very high. It is like they still want to fight. I will speak to both sides and we will get a solution,"
