On November 17, 2019, a violent confrontation between two rival groups of touts in Kisumu's bus terminus left several people injured, with two touts stabbed and rushed to Aga Khan Hospital.
The incident was triggered by a scramble to control passenger service vehicles plying the busy Kisumu-Nairobi route ahead of the festive season, according to police.
Police were forced to use teargas canisters and shoot into the air to disperse the warring parties and members of the public caught up in the chaos.
Kisumu Central Police Division Commander Martha Ngetich confirmed the incident, stating that sanity had been restored at the bus park with police monitoring the situation closely.
"It is true there were some fracas on Saturday evening but we have restored peace. We have launched investigations to establish what triggered the fight," Ngetich said.
Despite police efforts to restore order, tension remained high at the bus park, with a local resident describing the atmosphere as 'like they still want to fight one another'.
