On Saturday midnight, a group of five thugs posing as passengers hijacked a bus carrying about 50 people from the city centre to Buruburu.
The bus, which was driven recklessly through the Buruburu shopping centre, overturned and landed on its left side as police chased it.
Two of the suspects were shot dead shortly after the bus had overturned, while two homemade pistols were seized by the police.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver, who was among the gunmen, panicked and lost control of the bus as it approached Mumias Road.
One passenger who suffered serious injuries was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital.
Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo urged matatu crews to take measures to address such incidents, which have been on the decline in the past months.
He suggested that the screening of passengers before they board the matatus and the construction of barriers between drivers and passengers could help prevent such incidents.
On the night of the incident, a bodaboda rider alerted the police, who were on patrol in the area, after seeing the bus being driven recklessly and passengers screaming.
