On Saturday evening, a devastating accident occurred on the Malindi-Kilifi highway, claiming the lives of three people and leaving 25 others injured.

A 14-seater matatu, heading towards Mombasa, collided head-on with a saloon car, which was overtaking and heading towards Malindi, at around 8pm.

According to Malindi police base commander George Naibei, the matatu driver survived the accident and was admitted to the hospital, while the saloon car driver died.

Naibei also stated that the matatu was carrying an unknown number of excess passengers, and the saloon car's passenger count was also unclear.

Malindi Sub County Hospital Medical Superintendent Evans Ogato reported that 22 patients were admitted, with two adults and a child later passing away.

Mr. Ogato added that most of the victims suffered from fractured limbs, and personnel were sourced to handle the emergency.

Driver Julius Lughanje, who was traveling on the Mombasa-Malindi route, arrived at the scene and rescued some victims, including the matatu driver David Macharia.
