Published on November 17, 2019, Francis Atwoli, the Central Organisation of Trade Union (Cotu) boss, has sparked a heated debate with his proposal that President Uhuru Kenyatta should be elected as the country's Prime Minister in 2022.

Atwoli made this suggestion during a funds drive at Evangelical Bible Church in Uasin Gishu County, where he argued that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) could pave the way for an expanded government that would accommodate leaders from different tribes.

"I said sometime back this country needs a constitutional amendment because those in leadership are still young to retire and a new law will also accommodate them in leadership," Atwoli said.

Atwoli's proposal comes as President Kenyatta is set to serve his maximum two-five year terms in office come 2022, making him ineligible to contest for another term. However, Atwoli is confident that the BBI report, which is set to be released soon, will be passed by Kenyans, who will have a say in its implementation.
