President Uhuru Kenyatta's potential succession has been a topic of discussion in Kenya for years. According to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, the President is likely to become the country's third Prime Minister, following in the footsteps of his father Jomo Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a funds drive at Evangelical Bible Church-Ilula in Uasin Gishu County, Mr. Atwoli cited the President's remarks during the Sagana meeting as evidence of his claim. He stated that the President had said three years ago that the country needs a constitutional amendment to accommodate leaders who are still young to retire.
Mr. Atwoli maintained that Uhuru should continue serving after 2022 to ensure peace and development. He also predicted that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report would recommend creation of positions to ensure inclusivity, stating that six slots should be created to accommodate more leadership positions.
The Cotu boss warned Kenyans to be wary of leaders calling for rejection of the BBI report even before the contents are made public. He expressed optimism that the document will address challenges that have been affecting the country every five years.
