On November 15, 2019, a video of a group of baboons invading Multimedia University in Nairobi and chasing after students went viral on social media.
The university, adjacent to the Nairobi National Park, has been plagued by wild animals, including baboons and warthogs, which have been spotted on campus.
According to students, this was not the first time the wild animals had interrupted their activities. In fact, baboons have been known to enter classrooms during lecture hours, snatch food from students, and even invade their rooms to eat everything in sight.
“Won't you like to refresh in such a manner after a long week of lectures?? #OnlyInMmu #FridayFunday @IrumbiTabby and @Nissi254 see how lucky you're! epic.twitter.com/K9qmC9aCpU — Kendi Emily (@KendyEmily254) November 15, 2019
Mitchelle Imani, a student at the university, described the baboons as troublesome, saying they dislike women and often snatch food from students.
Interestingly, the baboons seem to emerge when the university is in session and disappear during the holidays. According to the African Wildlife Foundation, baboons are social animals that sleep, travel, feed, and socialize in groups of about 50, feeding on anything edible, including grass, meat, fish, and small antelopes.
