On November 16, 2019, the Masai Mara National Park in Narok County hosted the Masai Mara race, where Pius Karanja of Nyandarua and Maryann Wangui of Nakuru took home the top spots.
Organisers had cancelled the 21km road race at the last minute, replacing it with a 10km race. Karanja clocked 33 minutes 17 seconds to win the men's 10km race, beating a field of 78 runners.
Wangui dominated the women's 10km race, finishing in 42 minutes 40 seconds. She was followed closely by Alice Kamau of Nakuru in 42.44, Njoki Ndungu in 43.43, and Naserian Kakaya of Narok in 43.45.
Despite Karanja's win, the top ten slots in the men's 10km race were largely occupied by runners from Narok County. Paul Kibet of Narok came in second, followed by Raphael Ole Kei and Stanley Njihia of Nyandarua.
Coach Josephine Teeka attributed the good show by athletes from Narok County to good training and their familiarity with the terrain.
