On November 16, 2019, a grim discovery was made in Makaburini, Thingithu area, when detectives found bodies believed to be that of three missing Kayole family members.

Major Peter Mugure, a Kenya Defense Force officer, had been arrested a day earlier in connection with the disappearance of his estranged partner Joyce Syombua (31) and their children, Shanice Maua (10) and Prince Michael (5).

According to reports, the bodies were discovered at Makaburini, a 9-minute drive from the Laikipia Air Base, where Major Mugure had hosted Syombua and their children until Saturday at around 7pm.

Elizabeth Maua, Syombua's mother, had reported her daughter and the children missing at Soweto Police Station, alleging that Major Mugure had at one time tried to poison the children.

Major Mugure had previously been ordered by court to pay maintenance costs for his children after DNA tests proved he was their father.

He had initially told police that he did not know whether the three did indeed board a vehicle to Nairobi, but later changed his story, alleging that Syombua had called a friend in Nairobi and then left the Airbase with the children.
