On November 16, 2019, the Siaya County government launched an ambitious project to combat rampant illegal fishing in Lake Victoria. The Sh8 million initiative aims to equip fishermen with recommended fishing gear through saccos, ultimately improving the quality of fish and increasing stocks in the lake.

According to the county government, the project will see three fisherfolk saccos - Uhanya, Mageta, and Got Agulu - receive 4,400 nets. The distribution of these nets is expected to help fishermen avoid harassment by Ugandans over alleged use of illegal fishing gear.

Speaking at Usenge beach, Siaya County Executive for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Dr Elizabeth Odhiambo emphasized the importance of organized groups in accessing government funds. She encouraged more fishermen to join saccos, stating, "Accessing government funds is easier when people are in organised groups. I would therefore encourage more fishermen to join the saccos."
