On November 16, 2019, the United Nations and Somalia's international partners issued a statement welcoming the normalization of relations between Kenya and Somalia.

The move, which was announced on November 14, 2019, after a meeting between Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo in Nairobi, is seen as a significant step in strengthening the good relations between the two countries.

According to the statement, the normalization of relations will benefit the people of both countries and positively impact security and development in the wider Horn of Africa region.

The statement was signed off by the UN, AMISOM, Denmark, Egypt, Ethiopia, EU, Finland, France, and Germany, among other partners.

The normalization of relations comes after Kenya and Somalia agreed to put aside their maritime dispute and work towards a mutually beneficial relationship.
