On 26 October 2019, Joyce Syombua, 31, and her two children Shanice (10) and Prince Michael (5) went missing after visiting her estranged lover Major Peter Mugure in Nanyuki. The bodies of the three were discovered in Makaburini, Thingithu area in Laikipia County on 16 November 2019.

Major Peter Mugure, based at the Nanyuki barracks, was arrested on 15 November 2019 in connection with their disappearance. He was taken into custody for further interrogations and investigations.

According to Laikipia East Criminal Investigations Officer Jacob Muriithi, the suspect will be taken to court on Monday to seek more time to detain him.

Reports indicate that the relationship between Joyce Syombua and Major Peter Mugure had been on and off. The two had a series of text messages on the fateful day, with Syombua informing her friend that Mugure had left with the children while she was in the bathroom.

Her friend, Syombua Kateng'u, recounted that Syombua texted her at around 8am, informing her that Mugure had left with the children. However, when Syombua called Mugure, he said he was taking them on a tour of the facility and would be back.
