Meet Faith Cheruto Korir, a 24-year-old Bachelor of Science graduate with a passion for organic farming. After studying Analytical Science at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, Cheruto chose to soil her hands in organic farming.

Her research led her to discover Mucuna Pruriens, a legume with nitrogen-fixing components that has numerous benefits. Cheruto explains, 'Mucuna Pruriens is a legume with nitrogen-fixing components that overrode all others because its roots penetrate deeper into the soil and its leaves are rich in calcium and magnesium.'

However, Cheruto's journey was not without its challenges. She could not find the seed in Kenya, and her search led her to the United States, where she obtained the seed and learned how to grow it. Cheruto says, 'I flew to Florida in the United States of America after Google searches directed me to particular farmers there. I returned a week later in March with the precious seed in and equipped with useful skills on how to grow the legume.'

Cheruto's plan is to increase her acreage under the legume and spread the message about its benefits. She says, 'My goal is to see more farmers resorting to Mucuna Pruriens as a green natural manure and feed for their livestock.'

Research has established that Mucuna Pruriens is effective against male and female fertility challenges, neurological afflictions, and has numerous other benefits. The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) certified the legume fit for human consumption in a report dated August 17, 2019.

Cheruto's discovery has the potential to revolutionize farming in Kenya. With her elaborate plan to spread the message about Mucuna Pruriens, she hopes to see more farmers adopting this rare magic bean.
