Published on November 16, 2019, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has announced his readiness to resign from his position after the Amani National Coalition (ANC) threatened to expel him for supporting an ODM candidate in the Kibra by-election.

Malala's decision comes after he was accused of campaigning for Imran Okoth, the ODM candidate in the Kibra by-election, despite the presence of a Ford Kenya candidate.

"I am ready to resign as a senator under the ANC and allow for a new election to take place," Malala said in a statement.

Malala claimed that he had been subjected to pressure from the ANC leadership, despite the presence of other party leaders who had also supported candidates from other parties.

"There are members like Justus Muruga who is currently with the Jubilee party in Matungu, and no action is taken by the party leadership. MP Ayub Savula from Lugari wins and Deputy President William Ruto wins every time, and no action is taken," Malala said.

The ANC had earlier stated that Malala's decision to support the ODM candidate was a breach of the party's rules and that he would be expelled.
