On November 16, 2019, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala sparked controversy after he was suspended by the ANC Party for campaigning for ODM's Imran Okoth in the Kibra by-election.
Speaking at a press conference in Kakamega, Senator Malala dared the ANC Party to expel him, stating that he would rather face a by-election than apologize to ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi.
"I am the senior most elected leader in ANC, and I want to make this clear. I do not regret campaigning for ODM candidate Bernard Okoth in the Kibra by-election. I would rather face a by-election than apologize to Mudavadi," Malala declared.
The ANC disciplinary Committee, led by Chair Yare Mohammed, had taken disciplinary action against Malala, citing that his conduct seriously offended ANC party laws and Statute laws.
"After careful reflection and deliberation, ANC has decided to take necessary disciplinary action against this member (Malala) on grounds that his conduct seriously offends not only ANC party laws but Statute laws as well," Mohammed said.
