On November 16, 2019, a man was arrested by the police in Cape Town after being found in possession of 5g of cocaine and 5 packets of marijuana. The man, Kurt Oga Tunde, a Nigerian national, claimed that Jesus gave him the drugs to sell and feed his children.
According to the police, the man had been living in a bin behind a KFC restaurant in Parow, a southern suburb of Cape Town, for the past year. He was arrested after a tip-off from workers at the restaurant who reported hearing him scream 'thank you Jesus' at the top of his voice.
During his statement, Mr. Tunde claimed that Jesus had appeared to him in a dream a week ago and asked him if he believed that his God could save him. He said Jesus told him to stop living in the bin and that he would return with gifts in a few days' time.
Mr. Tunde claimed that Jesus appeared to him again early that morning and gave him the cocaine and marijuana, instructing him to sell them and feed himself and send some money to Nigeria, but after paying a tithe. He said he was promised that upon displaying loyalty, he would be given an even bigger loot in the coming days.
However, the police did not buy his story and suspect that the man was high on his own supply of weed. He has been charged with possession of narcotics and prohibited substances.
The public lawyer assigned to the man has indicated that he will enter a plea of insanity in court on Friday.
